Manifestation of Divine Judgment. Pestilence is generally seen in the Bible, like war and famine, as a manifestation of divine judgment upon human rebellion. A pestilence was sent on Israel as a result of David’s sin in numbering the people (2 Sam 24:13–15). Jeremiah and Ezekial repeatedly speak of pestilence as a punishment from God for Israel’s rebellion (Jer 14:12; 21:5–6; 29:17–18; Ezek 5:7, 12, 17; 6:11–12).
